Cartagena Calling: A Colorful Escape to Colombia’s Caribbean Gem

I recently spent a girls’ weekend in Cartagena, and let me just say—this city knows how to bring the energy. From the moment we arrived, it felt like the whole place was buzzing with life. The atmosphere was vibrant, infectious, and impossible to resist.

The streets of Cartagena are a visual feast. Brightly colored colonial buildings line the cobblestone paths, creating a postcard-perfect backdrop at every turn. Wandering through the historic Old Town felt like stepping into a dream—one filled with music, laughter, and a sense of timeless charm.

Music was everywhere, floating from balconies, bars, and passing street performers. There was always something to dance to, whether it was salsa, reggaeton, or something uniquely local. The rhythm of the city practically pulls you into its heartbeat.

One of my favorite parts of the trip was the food. I might have eaten my weight in tapas, and I have zero regrets. Every bite was packed with flavor—from crispy empanadas to ceviche so fresh it felt like it had been caught minutes before it hit the plate.

And let’s not forget the arepas. The scent of freshly made arepas followed us through the streets, and they quickly became a go-to snack. Whether stuffed with cheese or meat, they were the perfect bite between sightseeing stops.

When we needed a break from the city’s energy, Playa Blanca was just a short trip away. The white sand and crystal-clear water made for an ideal beach day. We lounged under palm trees, sipped on cocktails, and let the sound of the waves do all the work.

For something completely different—and surprisingly memorable—we visited the Totumo Volcano. I’m not usually one for rolling around in mud, but the warm, mineral-rich mud baths were oddly relaxing. Climbing into that crater was both hilarious and oddly therapeutic.

Cartagena was the perfect mix of adventure, relaxation, and cultural immersion. From beach days to mud baths to dancing in the streets, the city delivered an unforgettable weekend. I already can’t wait to go back.
